Via Paparum

Via Paparum

Papa Stronsay has its first concrete road the Via Paparum.

A new stairway makes communication from the cells to the rest of the monastery a pleasure.
Each simple improvement makes a great difference to the smooth running of the monastery.

The Road to the Isle

The Lower Station Pier in Stronsay extends in a north-westerly direction for 200ft by 40ft wide to Papa Stronsay.
The slipway will run parallel to the right hand side of this pier which has not seen serious use
since the pre-World War II herring fishing days.

After waiting for low tide the area is cleared, and polythene laid.

With sunlight as his load Br Magdala mixes cement and water.

Still waiting for low tide, several mixes of 1 metric ton of wet cement are kept in a trailer.

The first loads are laid.

Trenches and shuttering are placed
as we race against the tide.

Sunset puts an end to photographs
but not to the work.
